Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
